As autumn slowly arrives in Zurich, a familiar sweet and smoky scent begins to take over the city streets. It’s the unmistakable aroma of heissi Marroni — roasted chestnuts. These charming marroni stands are a cherished part of Zurich’s cold-weather culture, offering warmth in a paper cone and a taste of nostalgia. Here are BYCA's 6 favourite stands to visit this fall season:
Founded in 1985, Bellevue Marroni is one of the most iconic names in Zurich when it comes to roasted chestnuts. Originally established by Pavol Visnovsky, the business is now proudly run by his daughter Ana and her partner Severin, continuing the family tradition with passion and care.
Their chestnuts are sourced directly from Italy, and they take pride in roasting them to perfection. Visit their stands at Bellevue or Sihlcity to enjoy the authentic taste of Italian roasted chestnuts.
They also offer raw chestnuts to take home — and if you do, be sure to ask Ana and Severin for their expert tips on how to roast them just right. Bellevue, St. Urbangasse Monday - Saturday 11:00 - 19:00 Sunday 11:30 - 18:00
Sihlcity, Kalanderplatz Monday - Saturday 11:00 - 20:00 Sunday closed

Located on the bustling Bahnhofstrasse, right at the intersection with Rennweg, Krahl’s roasted chestnut stand is a beloved stop for those craving classic Swiss street treats. In addition to their delicious heissi Marroni, the stand also offers Magenbrot—a spiced, gingerbread-like cookie—and roasted almonds, both from the renowned Walliser Confiserie.

3) Frido's Heissi Marroni
While waiting in line for a small cone of heissi Marroni, I watch the chestnut roaster playfully toss the nuts into the air before they land neatly in the cone, just to entertain a young girl perched on her mother’s arm. The man behind the stand is Martin Zahn, better known as Frido. With over 40 years of experience, Martin is one of Zurich’s most seasoned—and most beloved—chestnut roasters.

4) Albisriederplatz & Utoquai
One of Zurich’s best-known spots for heissi Marroni is the stand at Albisriederplatz. Tucked between shops and restaurants, it’s a popular stop for locals and passersby alike. This stand is run by a collective named Rotchabis-Marronion. Besides Albisriederplatz, they have a stand at Utoquai as well. What makes their chestnuts so special? They roast the Marroni together with red cabbage; a unique method that adds moisture, enhances the flavor, and gives the chestnuts an extra touch of character.
